Literacy
Literacy is a major focus of Altrusa International, Inc. Our
chapter is committed to supporting the efforts of the Crittenden County
Literacy Council. The following message was written by Reeda Hampton,
Coordinator of the Literacy Council.
Located on the campus of Mid-South Community College, the Literacy
Council of Crittenden County is a nonprofit educational program designed
to fight illiteracy and underachievement in Crittenden County.
The program is designed to enable adults (18 and older) reading below
a fourth-grade level to develop basic skills in reading, writing,
speaking, and listening. Students are taught privately by concerned
volunteer tutors.
Interesting facts concerning illiteracy in Crittenden County
are:
- 22% of Arkansas residents operate at the lowest level of literacy.
- 32% of Crittenden County adults are considered functionally illiterate.
- Poor literacy skills are associated with: poverty, welfare dependence,
crime, and unemployment.
- Children of illiterate adults are more likely to have trouble in
school.
The success of the Literacy Council depends upon the work of concerned,
dedicated volunteer tutors. Workshops are held to train volunteers
in the art of leading others to success in learning the basic skills
of literacy. People like you and me are needed to help students improve
their quality of life, the lives of their family members and the quality
of our community. Will you volunteer to be that important someone
in helping others?
